How does teeth whitening work?

As our teeth age, they tend to darken and lose their white sheen. However, by applying a whitening agent, we are able to reverse the aging process and give you a whiter, brighter, smile!

It is not uncommon for people to use whitening toothpastes to try and improve the appearance of their teeth, although these are usually ineffective in achieving the white smile you would receive from a dentist as they don’t contain the safe bleaching agent, and can actually damage the tooth enamel. Others opt to visit their local beautician for a tooth whitening service, although this has its risks as they are not trained in dentistry and in more severe cases, could potentially cause chemical burns.

See our guide below to find out everything you need to know about safe teeth whitening.

What is teeth whitening?

A non-invasive procedure that can be used to whiten natural teeth, professional teeth whitening with your dentist does not destroy natural tissue. During the process, whitening agents are applied to the outside of the tooth for an allocated amount of time, oxidising the internal part of the tooth and making it whiter.

It is always advisable to see a professional about tooth whitening to reduce the risk of further health problems.

Illegal teeth whitening

In the last year, the General Dental Council (GDC) have reported a 26% increase in reports of illegal teeth whitening.

Only professional dentists or hygienists registered with the GDC can administer teeth whitening. Although, there is a growing number of untrained beauticians using teeth whitening kits that can lead to tooth loss, burns and blisters, as well as posing a greater risk of infection and permanent damage to the teeth, gums, mouth and jaw.

The chemicals used to whiten teeth are toxic, and if not used by qualified dentists can cause permanent damage to teeth and gums.
