The importance of brushing and flossing is drummed into us from an early age. In short, we are told that if we don’t want our teeth to fall out, we have to brush twice a day and floss daily too. New research by the Oral Health Foundation, however, has found that the order in which we brush and floss could be influencing our dental health.
The research has concluded that interdental cleaning prior to brushing is the best way to effectively clean our teeth. Popular belief has long been that we should floss after brushing our teeth, however, the study has revealed that flossing before brushing loosens any food debris and bacteria from the teeth, meaning the actual teeth brushing is much more successful at removing plaque.
How to Floss Effectively
- Find the right size brush
Contrary to common view, an interdental brush is not ‘one size fits all.’ It should fit comfortably between your teeth with little force and you might find that you need a few different sizes for different teeth. The best option here is to consult with your dentist or hygienist on your next visit.
- Don’t force it
Gently ease the brush between the gap of your teeth – do not force it. If your interdental brush does not fit adequately, you may be using the incorrect size.
- Remove the debris
Some people make the mistake of flossing/brushing too hard and harming their gums. Gently brush in and out of each space between your teeth to remove the food debris and bacteria.
